It’s nice and all but it just doesn’t “ feel ” like a NSX. I feel it’s far too heavy ( 3,803 lbs ) and I’d probably prefer it if it wasn’t a hybrid. It also looks a bit generic to me. If I had the money I’d probably just buy a nice NA2.

They do look pretty striking in person. Saw one in Nashville this past February and really liked the look of it.

But idk that it comes off as quite living up to the NSX legacy. Then again, it hasn’t really had the chance to yet. That’s a tall order for any car.

Also a fattie for what it is. And you can’t turn traction control off. Still want one and will seriously be in line to buy one if they ever bring it here.

I’m conflicted. And I’m not even an NSX fan to begin with.

On the one hand all the reviews I read say it behaves amazingly well. On the other hand I think it looks bland and dated, and also I think it’s doing an LFA: going waaayyy too upmarket with a brand that really can’t pull it off at the moment. And it slots in in no man’s land, more expensive than some McLarens and Ferrari but also much slower and attractive than more expensive hypercars. Again, like the LFA.

I admire what it’s trying to do, and I’d probably love to drive it, but I just don’t have the wants.

I haven’t personally driven one yet, but I’m keeping an open mind. On paper the original didn’t have the specs of its competitors, but it provides the most fantastic driving experience I’ve ever... um... experienced.

I’m not really an NSX fan, but if all the haters would think for a minute, the NSX has always been a response to Italian exotics.

In 1989, the NSX came out to beat the Ferrari 328. Ferrari itself released the more powerful 348 in the same year, but the NSX was significantly better-engineered and of course much less temperamental. It had the first implementation of variable cam timing, the first all-aluminium construction on a production car, etc. The truss suspension arm and post were mindblowing at the time and still are.

Similarly, the second NSX was a response to the 458. It offers simultaneous turbocharging and electric assist, only one of which was eventually adopted by the new 488 that Ferrari again released the very same year. My biggest complaint about the car is the same complaint with the 488—turbos take away a lot of the raw sound.

The original NSX shocked the sports car world because it was the first mid-engined Japanese exotic. There can never be another “first”.

The original NSX was about pushing boundaries and highlighting what Honda can do. From Chris Harris’ review, the new NSX is actually very engaging to drive with all the final calibrations done (most of the reviews are of pre-production cars). I love it because it’s a bargain 918 Spyder. Filled to the brim with tech to broaden the car’s scope, and stretch the limits of what we deem possible. In that respect, it’s the S-class of entry-level supercars, and I love it.

I haven’t driven it, so I don’t know. I will say this, some cars feel light for their weight and others feel heavy.

I will say this, the front is ugly to me, for the money I’d rather have a different car. But it has advanced features, there haven’t been any embarrassing failures that I know of, and it’s fast.

Cars change, it happens, BMW has AWD and even fwd cars, Porsche went water cooled, the new nsx is different than the old one.

Its is a bit heavier than its competition R8 (at 3600 lbs) but it also has to deal with its electric motors. I think Soichiro would like the car but he would have wanted the car to be pushed even more. The original broke all sorts of boundaries and hit its Italian counter parts right in the mouth. The original NSX was to have one of the best power to weight ratios and be one of the closest production vehicles to F1 which at the time they were owning. They wanted to create a car that conformed to what everyone else was doing, Honda just wanted the best car they could make. And they did no one could catch them in F1 or with the NSX. But then it was no longer considered a challenge and Honda moved on . As I feel they did with the NSX, it never got any major upgrades other than engine tweeks and a facelift (some R versions too). With the new NSX they (like they are now in F1) were playing catch up (458 was its benchmark, well the 488 is now out) and not aiming for the stars. Its a great car and with its hybrid drivetrain it is ahead of the competition and it didnt conform to what others are doing in the price range. But it feels like they could have squeezed more out of it, power, handling, technology, or something, because when Honda really puts their mind to it they can build some of the best stuff ever made.

Kinja'd!!!

(From Honda’s website)

Overall I really like the car, good looks and performance and its a good punch at the competition. But as I said above Honda was the ones everyone was chasing, now they are the ones chasing everyone else.

It had the first implementation of variable cam timing

The NSX wasn’t even Honda’s first vehicle with variable valve timing (only Ford calls it variable cam timing), let alone the world’s first. The B16 engine used in the Japanese market Integra, CRX and Civic were equipped with VTEC in 1989. Alfa Romeo was the first to use a variable valve timing system in 1980.

I want one in 130R over Orchid, but not as much as I want an original 92-94 NSX-R, with a Comptech supercharger and some other mods. It’d cost about the same, have a little better power-to-weight ratio, and have the right number of pedals.

Then the 1989 NSX was even less groundbreaking than I described. It was shocking mostly because it was a product not expected of Honda.

I should note that the original NSX’s power-to-weight ratio was immediately surpassed by the Ferrari 348 released the same year. This is because the NSX was meant to beat the Ferrari 328 which dates back to 1985.

The only NSX that was significantly lighter was the JDM NSX-R. The original NSX-R was a stripped-out version that does not even have airbags.

That said, the NSX was vastly better designed and built than any Ferrari of the time, including the 348.

I think it was more shocking because of the exotic look and ease of maintenance. Honda had been making groundbreaking motorcycles for a while and was successful in F1 at the time the NSX debuted. They weren’t known as a boring company like they are today (outside of their motos). I have a forty year old Honda motorcycles with a DOHC engine utilizing torsion bars instead of valve springs and making over 100 hp/L with tech they designed in the ‘50s. Honda made lots of cool stuff back in the day.

I’ve been fortunate enough to drive my brother-in-law’s original NSX on several occasions, and I have to say I can’t think that any car would be able to surpass that car in all of the old-school ways (steering feel, handling, shifting, etc). And it's plenty fast for public roads.

It is likely that I will never drive a new NSX, but one that weighs more, with electric steering and an automated manual can’t possibly be any more fun than the original. But that could probably be said about a lot of cars moving forward.
